Everywhere you look the world is turning green. Whether or not your personal views endorse the scientific schools of thought so widely held as the root of changes in the earth climate, the issue for the IT industry essentially remains one I think it always had to face up to. And retailers are no less likely to escape the impact of 'green IT' than any other businesses.

The fact is, in the face of dwindling natural resources and rising energy prices, retailers can no longer afford to look at the power consumption as if it were on tap. From their lighting and control systems, product development and packaging to distribution and fleet management, data centre, heating and cooling needs, greater automation and control offer a tangible way of cutting one of the central operating costs every retailer incurs.
