Japanese retailer creates innovative digital media experience for shoppers in London and New York

Audio-visual (A/V) experts PlayNetwork have announced completion of a series of eye-catching A/V installations at UNIQLO’s flagship stores in London and New York.

The new stores are designed to position UNIQLO as an influential, modern retailer and help create visual and emotional connections with shoppers. Elements of the new flagship prototype are being installed in stores worldwide, bringing to life UNIQLO’s fashion merchandise and establishing the brand in new markets.

As customers move through the London and New York stores, they experience digital media featured on more than 300 LCD video displays and 175 audio speakers, which the A/V expert said envelops the stores in waves of sound and sight.

Custom designed store experience

Shoppers are entertained by innovative custom LED video installations in the glass elevators and storefront windows and LED “tunnel ticker” displays, which were developed by PlayNetwork in conjunction with its partner D3 LED.

Customers are also exposed to music from speakers hidden from view within store columns as they ride the escalators. Additionally, to facilitate more efficient installation and maintenance of the video walls, which traditionally require one mount per screen, the PlayNetwork engineering team created a custom, one-piece mount for multiple screens.

“UNIQLO has a tremendously talented store design team who understand A/V systems can be conduits for consumer inspiration,” said Darrell Champagne, PlayNetwork operations executive vice president. “Our ultimate goal is to execute a unique, high-quality consistent global entertainment experience for UNIQLO and we’re very proud of their flagship stores.”

Demonstrating customer commitment

“Audio and visual systems are an essential element of our store environment and the innovations featured in our new flagship stores illustrate our commitment to quality and the customer experience,” said Kensuke Suwa, UNIQLO director of global marketing. “New York City is one of the greatest cities in the world, and we’re excited to contribute to the world-famous Fifth Avenue shopping experience.”

Japanese retailer UNIQLO, a subsidiary brand owned by Fast Retailing Co. Ltd., opened its new global flagship stores on Regents Street in London and on Fifth Avenue in New York on 14 October. UNIQLO's third New York store located on 34th Street opened 21 October.

PlayNetwork said it was also installing some of the retailer’s new audio and video store elements in Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Thailand, as well as in another flagship store in Paris.
