Department store retailer appoints technology company to enrich customer experience and increase sales

Debenhams has appointed e-commerce technology company Fredhopper to enrich the shopping experience of its online customers and drive sales.

The department store chain, which has over 150 shops in the UK and Ireland, awarded its business to Fredhopper following a competitive industry pitch. Fredhopper’s core products – intelligent on-site search, navigation and merchandising – are playing key component roles in the retailer’s recent re-launch of its website.

The provider added that Debenhams.com will roll out new technologies this month to further improve its online store user experience. Fredhopper’s ‘search box predictive text’ and search engine optimisation (SEO) modules are due to be integrated into the site.

Usability gets thumbs up

“We needed to work with a company whose technology could not only dramatically improve the usability of our website but could also be easily used by our marketing and merchandising teams,” said Brett Bennett, senior web manager at Debenhams. “Fredhopper works with a number of top UK retailers and really gets the link between providing an easy customer journey and sales.”

Since the re-launch of its website Debenhams has seen a double-digit increase in conversions.

“Debenhams is investing in technology that will provide a better all round experience for its customers and keep them coming back to the site,” commented Joris Beckers, Fredhopper chief executive. “Too many retailers spend time and money driving consumers to their online shops but forget about the basics. Allowing customers to successfully search for products, navigate intuitively around each department only viewing the categories they choose and relevant products are vital functions to help people put the products they want into their baskets quickly and complete their purchases.”
