Smart mirror to offer payment option

Mastercard has announced the first smart mirror to include a payment function

The mirror will speed up the shopping experience by reducing time spent in the fitting room by 40% and reducing time in store.

It creates a personalised experience akin to having a personal shopper in every store, transforming the consumer’s instore experience and allowing shoppers to avoid the checkout altogether by paying instantly with Masterpass.

The mirror also allows shoppers to change lighting and language; view and request size and colour variations for products in the room; view and request recommended items, request specific items to be brought directly to their room.

Virtual shopping

Mastercard has developed the OAK mirror using RFID (radio frequency identification) technology embedded in the hang tags of clothing so the mirror recognises products as they enter the room, creating a virtual shopping basket for customers.

Retailers can receive and respond to fitting room requests from anywhere in the store, view fitting room occupancy at a glance, check inventory and availability and gather product feedback.

Mike Cowen, head of digital payments, Mastercard UK said: “Augmented and virtual reality is transforming how we shop. And while high streets are being challenged by the popularity of online shopping, these technologies allow retailers to fight back by giving the public the digital convenience they demand. We are working closely with these brands to deliver new and safer ways to pay to provide a more personal and speedy experience for shoppers.”
