Majestic Wine updates e-commerce

Selects Intershop and Javelin Group for new multi-site transactional e-commerce platform to support growth over the next five years

Majestic Wine, the biggest mixed case wine and Champagne merchant in the UK, recently revealed it had selected Intershop and Javelin Group to replace its legacy Microsoft Commerce Server e-commerce platform.

The company made its selection based on the functionality of the content management system and back-end tools, as well as its small resource footprint, following a competitive tender process that included evaluation of not only the e-commerce platform, but also the systems integrator.

Richard Weaver, Majestic Wine e-commerce director, stated” "Intershop and the Javelin Group development team offered a solid combination of software and support. The solution proposed fits the needs of our online business today and for future growth.”

The main driver for initiating the e-commerce project was to provide a future-proof enterprise e-commerce platform that gives the retailer a stable base for ongoing development. Majestic Wine also decided that a number of new ideas for additional functionality best would be tackled by a full overhaul rather than through incremental development.

Finding solutions to meet business needs

A number of key online capabilities required of the new e-commerce platform were included as part of the bid process. These included enabling customers to place a six-bottle order minimum, purchase pre-mixed cases or mix their own and browse stock based on local availability. It also wanted to provide personalised product recommendations and make use of non-product specific content including blogs, video and wine guides.

In addition, the new systems had to support fulfilment by local store, the complex checkout rules and a second storefront for Majestic's stores in France. Majestic Wines also chose to find provider’s that could integrate with Fredhopper, as the selected search and navigation provider.

Weaver said the company was not wedded to any particular IT supplier, but instead looked for a best-of-breed product capable of meeting requirements, “from a vendor which continues to invest in and develop its solutions”.

“Intershop's comprehensive content management system and simple back-end tools impressed us,” he added. “Furthermore, Intershop's platform is not resource hungry, which was a pleasant surprise given all the functionality available.”

The new Majestic Wine site is expected to launch in summer 2013.
