Casio today announced the release of its VX-100 electronic point-of-sale (EPoS) terminal, the first to run Google’s Android operating system (OS).

The compact EPoS terminal comes equipped with a main 10.4-inch colour LCD touchscreen display, a sub-display for showing information to customers and a built-in thermal printer to generate receipts.

Simplified management controls

Designed for use in small-to-midsized (SME) enterprise retail stores, the VX-100 works as both a standalone system or as part of a networked system.

It comes preloaded with sales management software to operate its cash register functions with its optional cash drawer, as well as web browser and email applications. The manufacturer said the system could and automatically execute instructions contained in received emails, like checking sales data from a remote location.

Casio is also offering optional customer relationship management (CRM), reservation management and sales management applications. This is then designed to make database management of preferred customers’ purchase history available for creating tailored marketing strategies.

Full-featured specification

Weighing in at approximately 5 kilograms, the VX-100 runs Android OS version 2.2 on an ARM Cortex-A9 Dual Core 533MHz processor with 512MB of random access memory (RAM), 2GB of Flash read-only memory, a SD memory card slot and a magnetic card reader interface.

It also includes a RJ45 (10/100 Base-T/Tx) Ethernet port, a USB 2.0 Type A Host port and three mini D-sub 9-pin RS-232C ports, as well as Nickel metal hydride rechargeable battery for memory backup.

Casio’s VX-100 business support terminal will begin shipping in December 2011, but pricing was not available at the time of writing.
